Do you walk to school or pack a lunch?

Today was pottery day. After breakfast everyone piled into the vans and Sam's car and then headed towards Arita which is essentially the Pottery Capital of Japan. It is in Arita where pottery was first introduced to the Japanese by the Koreans. I can only assume that after many hundreds of years that the craftsmen in Arita have been able to master the art of pottery. I sure know the prices seem to indicate that.

These beautiful pieces were on sale for around 6,000 - 10,000 dollars

Dave & Kait pose in front of these pieces worth over 80,000 dollars.

Browsing one of many stores full of wondrously beautiful hand painted intricate pottery. Do you see Mr. Huggins? Below him is Megumi... and then behind her you will notice Geneva. Well, to the right of her and behind her a little is Stephanie. If you aren't sure who Stephanie is you'll also be able to locate her by finding David N. He's the person closest to the camera and in the bottom right hand of the picture. In front of him are Stephanie and Sam.... Sam is in the stripped shirt to the right, and Stephanie is in the black top to the left of Sam. So... you've now found Stephanie? Well, see the shelf of glasses in front of her that is at a slight angle? You can see the three cups that appear to be right next to her head and are on the bottom shelf.. above that you'll see four and one half cups which are located on the shelf right above the bottom shelf. Counting from the left you can see four full cups. The first one, starting from the left appears to be white and is right next to a light blue cup. Do you see that second row with the blue cup that is the second one in from the left that is right next to Stephanie's head who is right next to Sam? Well... The row above that has 6 glasses. It is the row in which the middle two glasses are black and red, respectively. The third row up from the bottom with the black and red glasses in the middle has a white cup on the left hand side of the row. Well, that cup on the left hand side of the 3rd row up from the bottom of the shelf that is right next to Stephanie's head who is standing next to Sam who is wearing a stripped shirt.... that cup on the very left of that row... I bought one just like it at another store.

Pretty cool huh? Or, as we like to say in Japan, Segoy!

Sam: "What's this? Why do these 'bowls' have holes in the bottom?"
Kim: "Why don't you think about it and let it sink in, or something."

Sleepy

I am sleepy now too - I'm going to head to bed. We leave at 7am for the Volcano and Monkey Mountain tomorrow. It's going to be a long day. It's a 5 hour drive to the Volcano.

It's 11:30 PM and I'm signing off for the night! I hope you have enjoyed the blog tonight!

Hi Steve and everyone,

Here you are, beginning your second week in Japan. What wonderful memories (and pictures) you will have for the rest of your lives! Thank you again for sharing your experiences with the rest of us. I especially enjoyed the "close-up" shots of so many of you in this set.

This morning Vern and I got the link to a brand new video that our son-in-law has just finished making. He did this with a new technology of "synching" pictures with music. The video is a blend of family pictures taken over the years set to music he composed and recorded onto a CD called "Sweet Dreams and Starlight", written especially for his children.

Anyway, here's the link which will give you a 4-minute glimpse into the lives of our daughter, Julie, husband David, and grandchildren, Nathan and Noelle. It's really beautiful.

When you get to the picture of Noelle in the tulip field there's a pause, but wait a sec, because there's more.

Okay, I admit it, I'll take any excuse to pass around my "gramma pictures"! Some time ago when I didn't have any such pictures with me, my sister-in-law scolded me, shook her head with a "tsk-tsk" and said she was "going to sic the gramma police on me." So I've become more bold in sharing, and I hope you enjoy this musical collage of family outings.

Please keep sending your Japan pictures and stories. Oh! Yeah! Steve, Vern just cracked up when he got through your long-drawn-out description of just exactly WHICH
cup you bought! I did, too. So that was the punchline? It was like unwrapping a box which contained a smaller box which contained yet a smaller box, and so on. In the end there was nothing but an empty box and a good laugh. But it was worth it, and after all, you DO have a new cup.

Now that you've selected your cup, go back to the jewelry store and buy your mother a black pearl!

Looking forward
to your next post,
Ruby Isaac

Wow! Ruby ...you should generously share that slide show with others. That is beautiful! Jonathon is very familiar with David's music. He did a Wonderful job of putting together the slide show. Your grandchildren look very precious.

In Christ,
